The moving checklist so you don’t forget anything. Are you planning a move but don’t know how to get organized? Here’s our list of all the must-have items you’ll need to think about throughout the process, and even afterwards.

3 months before the move :

  • Create a list of all documents relating to the move and put them in a file.
  • If you’re a tenant, notify your landlord or rental agency (refer to the ALUR law).
  • Sort through your belongings to determine what you want to take with you.
  • Think about changing your children’s schools, or finding childcare solutions for young children.

  • Apply for financial assistance for your move.
  • Take one or more days off work to move with peace of mind.
  • If you have a pet, think about transporting it now.

2 months before moving :

  • Notify your GP of your departure.
  • Inform the administration of your future change of address.
  • Cancel your various subscriptions if necessary.

1 month before the move :

  • Start packing your belongings.
  • Apply for parking spaces.
  • Transfer your various contracts (internet, electricity, gas…) and choose your new suppliers. Muter Loger can help you with all these steps.

15 days before the move :

  • Arrange an appointment for the inspection visit(s). Muter Loger will help you with the process and organize the inspection.
  • Insure your new home.
  • Arrange for your mail to be forwarded: contact La Poste to set up temporary mail forwarding for a period of 6 or 12 months from the desired date (the minimum delay is 2 working days).
  • Start planning the layout of your furniture in your new home to make unloading easier.

8 days before the move :

  • Ask for all the keys to your new home.
  • Prepare a bag with basic necessities such as snacks and drinks, tools, cleaning products, a first-aid kit and a toiletry kit.
  • Prepare a folder with important documents (identity card, passport, family record book, health book, driving license, etc.).
  • Remember to change your pet’s address via Icad.
  • Prepare empty boxes to be filled at the last minute for items that cannot be packed before the big day.

1 day before the move :

  • Unplug all your electrical appliances.
  • Defrost your freezer and drain your washing machine and dishwasher.
  • Go through every corner of your home to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything, then remove all items hanging from the ceiling and walls.
  • Don’t forget to recharge your phone for the big day.

D-Day :

  • Take your pre-prepared folder containing your most important papers.
  • Read the meters (electricity, water and gas) and take photos, then turn off the water and electricity supply.
  • Close doors and windows.
  • Take with you any belongings you don’t want to or can’t entrust to someone else (jewelry, small personal items, etc.), or protect them as much as possible (e.g. crockery) with bubble wrap, newspaper or linen to cushion the

  • Remove the nameplate from your mailbox and door.
  • Check and inspect the condition of your furniture and packaging, then give your specific instructions to the movers.

After your move :

  • If you notice any damage, report it as soon as possible to your mover or insurance company.
  • Finalize your administrative formalities.
  • Register on the electoral roll in your new place of residence (before December 31 of the current year).
  • Choose your new GP.
  • Update your vehicle registration document (within 30 days).
